FROM EL SUR IS WHERE I AM FROM — AND THE NAME OF THIS PROJECT
In 2022, in London, by Mariela Garcia. It began as an intimate, almost instinctive practice. What started with collecting garments for myself grew into a way of seeing and working: selecting pieces for their patterns, fabrics, silhouettes, and the way they can be styled to feel both functional and visually considered.
The name points back to origin. I am from Seville, in Andalusia, in the south of Spain — a place shaped by memory, contrast, and cultural depth. That influence runs quietly through the project, not as nostalgia, but as attitude: a balance between tradition and modernity, restraint and expression.
The curation is guided by an aesthetic rooted in edgy minimalism, archival research, cinema, street culture, and flamenco. I am drawn to garments with strong construction, defined silhouettes, and a clear sense of era. Styling is central, allowing each piece to exist naturally in the present.
This is an ongoing curatorial practice rather than a fixed collection. Every selection is made with care, led by visual instinct and a clear aesthetic direction, valuing timelessness, wearability, and emotional resonance.
At its core, the project is a personal exploration of origin, identity, and style — a way of carrying the south forward through a contemporary lens.
FROM EL SUR means FROM THE SOUTH
